Bumper

I built this as a perfect companion to Barpack but it is also a great cradle for other handlebar-mounted bags on its own. With a weight of 73 g complete (for a Fox 34 fork) combined with a load limit of 8 kg its load to weight ratio is second to none afaik.

Now why does it look so strange and how does it work exactly? The plastic part provides two contact points with the fork and the dyneema cord adds a third with stem & handlebar in a way similar to Jack-the-Rack. All three contact points turn with the handlebar of course and together they make the whole system really solid. When a bag is mounted on the handlebar it exerts force in 2 directions: Downwards and backwards. By positioning the bag so that it rests on the upper edge of Bumper´s plastic part both forces are negated: The downwards force because the cord does not let Bumper slide down and the backwards force because the plastic part is pressed against the fork.

Bumper is a great way to protect your headtube & cables as well as increase tire clearance for bags mounted to the handlebar.

PS: In case you’re worried that the “thin cord” won´t hold: Don’t be, Dyneema is the strongest fibre know to man, this variant is rated for 120 kg and there are four strands between which the force is distributed.

If you have a fork that is already known to me you can simply order for that fork.

If you have a fork that is not on the list of known forks you can order for “unknown fork”. After receiving your order I´ll instruct you how to measure your fork, thereby adding it to the list for the future. You will be rewarded by paying only half the price as well as adding your name to the list 😉. Bumper should work with almost any fork with the obvious exception of a Lefty.

List of known forks:

  • Fox 34 (measurements provided by Karsten)
